COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Activity Director

Activity Directors work in Adult Care settings and apply therapeutic activity treatment modalities to produce desired outcomes for residents, facilitate group work, oversee principles and procedures for activity management, construct and implement service modes which meet the needs, abilities and personal goals of diversified clients. Individuals desiring to become an Activity Direct in a healthcare related seeking must complete a minimum of 60 hours basic course in an approved Activity Director course. A high school diploma or High School equivalency diploma is required to take the course.

Direct Care Worker

Direct Care Workers work in various settings to provide care for individuals of all ages who have physical, mental, and developmental disabilities or a chronic illness. This is a 4-phase comprehensive training and competency program for direct care workers (DCWs) with a primary focus on individuals seeking to work in home and residential care settings.

The 4 phases include:

Phase I: job readiness skills, literacy, numeracy, keyboarding, and realistic job previewing;
Phase II: Non-nurse aide – not listed on the Nurse Aide registry but may provide personal care to clients with limited assistance in home care and in other settings where the Nurse Aide I listing is not required., personal care tasks, an d soft skill development:
Phase III: expanded/enhanced Nurse Aide I content
Phase IV: advanced nurse aide training and soft skills focused on specific care environments such as home and adult care home settings.

ECG/EKG Monitor Technician

This course teaches the student anatomy and physiology of the heart, principles of EKG readings and how to recognize abnormal rhythms of the heart. The student will become proficient in reading and interpreting EKGs. Course work includes classroom and simulations practice. Upon satisfactory completion of the course, the student will be eligible to take the written exam and skills competency test for interpreting cardiac heart rhythms. Course work serves as prerequisite for certification as a 12 Lead EKG technician offered through the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians (ASPT).

Health Unit Coordinator

This online course is designed to prepare a student for entry-level position as a hospital unit secretary. Medical terminology will be stressed as a basis for all other skills of communication, maintaining records, reports, charts, and data entry as well as basic medical law and ethics will be presented. This course prepares individuals to sit for the National Health Unit Coordinator exam.

Medical Billing and Coding

This program consists of two online courses that will lead to a certificate in billing and coding. The classes are designed for those seeking experience in coding and billing for healthcare agencies. Upon completion of required classes students will be awarded a certificate. Students must complete two online courses: Medical Terminology w/ Anatomy and Physiology and Medical Billing and Coding w/legal issues. After completion of the program, students may be able to seek certification as a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) awarded by the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) credentialing agency. A CPC Exam Prep course or study guide may be helpful prior to testing for certification.

Medication Aide

This course is designed to meet the training requirements for becoming qualified to be a Medication Aide in a skilled facility. The course covers the six rights of medication administration for non-licensed personnel. Topics will include medication administration via the oral, topical and instillation routes, medical asepsis, hand hygiene, terminology, and legal implication. Upon completion, students should be able to take the competency exam and demonstrate skills necessary to qualify for listing on the North Carolina Medication Aide Registry. This certification does not qualify the person to work in an Adult Care Home nor a Group Home. Listing on Nurse Aide I (NAI) registry is advised.

Nurse Aide I

This course prepares students to provide personal care and perform basic nursing skills for the elderly and other adults. Emphasis is on the process of aging including mental, social, and physical needs of the elderly; patient's rights; nutrition management; elimination procedures; safe environment; restorative services; personal and special care procedures and activities; human body structure and related common diseases/disorders; communication and documentation; death and dying and roles of the Nursing Aide and health team members.

Upon satisfactory completion of the course and a skills/competency evaluation, the graduate is eligible to apply to take the NC State Exam to be placed on the NA I registry. NC State Exams are given through PearsonVUE. The Nursing Aide I class includes classroom/lab instruction and clinical rotation. (Traditional and Hybrid courses offered)

*Prior to enrollment in the Nurse Aide I program, you must meet the following requirements:

1. Attend a mandatory 30-minute information session prior to registration. Sessions are scheduled each semester.
2. Copy of HS Diploma or GED or secondary transcript (High School students transcripts of GPA: 2.6 or higher)..
3. Complete criminal background check and drug screen by designated due date (must use designated online and laboratory for tests and screens).
4. Pregnancy: If pregnant or become pregnant, must provide a letter from MD stating there are no limitations to taking the class. Admission must be approved by Program Director.
5. Must have a Tuberculosis skin test current within the past year.
6. Vaccination Records: MMR Records – Documentation of two immunization shots or titer/Hepatitis B Series (NOTE: If you were born before 1957 you do not have to provide these records.).
7. Documentation of flu shots required.
8. Complete criminal background/drug screen prior to start of class.(NOTE: Must use designated laboratory only for tests and screens).

Attendance to one session is required for registration in NA 1 & NA 2 classes.

Nurse Aide II

This program prepares students to perform more complex skills for patients or residents. Emphasis is on infection control including principles of sterile technique and dressing changes for wounds over 48 hours; elimination procedures including catherizations, irrigations, and care of established ostomies; intravenous site care; observation and removal; oropharyngeal suctioning; established tracheostomy care; observation and maintenance of oxygen therapy; breaking/removing fecal impactions; enteral nutrition for existing infusions and roles of Nursing Aide II with members of health-care teams. Upon satisfactory completion of the course and a skills/competency evaluation, graduates are eligible to apply for listing as a Nursing Aide II by the North Carolina Board of Nursing. The Nursing Aide II class includes 80 hours of classroom/lab instruction and 80 hours of clinical rotation. (Traditional and Hybrid courses offered)

Nurse Aide II Competency Testing

This course is designed to provide the student with an opportunity to demonstrate competency skills required by the NC Board of Nursing to practice as an NA II. Students who have been removed from the NA II registry for 24 months or less are eligible to take this test. The student must be active on the NA I registry and have been listed on the NA II registry. Students successfully demonstrating all required skills will be referred to the Board of Nursing for re-listing on the NA II registry.

Nurse Aide Refresher

This course is a review of the knowledge, skills and abilities required to become re-certified as a nursing assistant. Upon successful completion of the course the student is eligible to make application for the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) Examination necessary for listing on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry. Persons who have not been off the Nurse Aide I registry more than four or five years qualify to take this course. Persons who are currently certified in other states may qualify to take this course, but need to provide documentation of testing in that state completes the course with in-state or out-of-state may qualify, but need approval by credentials with the program coordinator prior to registration.

Pharmacy Technician Program

This program will train students on interpreting medication orders prescribed by physicians and nurse practitioners, filling orders, preparing mixtures, replenishing drugs, maintaining the patient profile records appropriately and assisting with over the counter medications while adhering to standard procedures and laws. Graduates of the program may take the National Certification Exam. Credit awarded towards two-year degree program.

Phlebotomy Technician

This course will prepare the student to draw blood specimens from patients for testing and/or analyzing blood. Upon completion, the student will be prepared to take the National Phlebotomy Certification Examination offered by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). Student must complete clinical rotation with 100 venipunctures and 25 finger sticks. At completion the student will be able to demonstrate competence in the theoretical comprehension of phlebotomy techniques.

ServSafe Food Handling

Food service workers who handle food must comply with the North Carolina Food Protection Standards. Certification classes and testing is required to obtain the ServSafe Certification. Basic food safety, personal hygiene, cross contamination, allergy time temperature, cleaning and sanitation is covered in the classes offered. Testing is done on-site by ServSafe approved proctors.

Spanish Medical Interpreter

This 120-hour program trains students who are fluent in English and Spanish to become Spanish Medical Interpreters. Through a mix of Spanish/English Medical Terminology, Interpreter Skills Training, Lab Practice and Clinical Site practice, the students will receive the training necessary to work as a Spanish Medical Interpreter.
